New Instructor Tips
York University Bookstore’s New Instructor Tip Sheet

- The publisher’s customer service desk
- The publisher’s Higher Education Division support staff
- The publisher’s website (limited but growing)
Ordering - Please don’t assume that books have been ordered for your class or that there is overstock from a previous semester. If you know which books you want to use, contact the buyer responsible for your subject area.
If a book is used specifically for grades (i.e. open book exam, web access code required for bonus marks, lab manual) please indicate this when ordering
Contact Us - You can always contact us by e-mail, by telephone, or in person. The contact information is found on the Textbook & Course Kit Contacts sheet.
Information Source - The bookstore can provide helpful information such as previous books used, approximate timelines to obtain books, and publisher contacts. We are one more resource available to help you with your textbook selection process. Our goal is to provide the students with the books you require by the beginning of class when possible.
Desk Copies - PLEASE NOTE that publishers require that desk copies requests come directly from instructors or departments and not from the bookstore. You can find the publisher contact info by downloading this list Download the Publisher Contact information list.
Course Lists - Course lists are available on the bookstore website about one month before classes begin. They are entered in the order they are received so there may be delays as we get closer to the beginning of classes. If you see an error in your list, or do not see your list posted, please contact the textbook department of the bookstore.
At the bookstore - When visiting the bookstore, if you have a query regarding your course material, please identify yourself to the staff and they will direct you to a buyer. The textbook office is located in the basement of the bookstore behind the information desk.
Course Kits - Our coursekit provider has many articles archived from previous course kits. Please contact our coursekit team for timelines and information. They can be contacted at ckits@yorku.ca or at 043 Central Square.
A late appointment can be a stressful time. At the bookstore we will try to make your textbook adoption as straightforward as possible. We are here to help.
Obtaining Examination Copies
Obtaining Textbook Examination and Desk Copies
Examination Copy: Publishers may provide faculty with a copy of a book being considered for course use. The publisher refers to this as an “examination” copy.
Desk Copies: After a book has been adopted for course use, the publisher may provide one or more desk copies for instructors and TAs use.
Unfortunately publishers will not allow the Bookstore to order examination or desk copies. You can contact:
In some cases this can be done over the phone or by email, however, the publisher may require a written request on departmental letterhead to be sent in. Policies will vary from publisher to publisher.
